Koru Ārahi | Leadership Koru
Our Koru Ārahi [Leadership Koru] gives us a shared vision of great leadership at Te Whatu Ora Waitaha | Canterbury and Te Tai o Poutini | West Coast.
It’s based on the Leadership Success Profile from New Zealand’s Public Services Commission | Te Kawa Mataaho. Much of the mahi [work] we do is influenced by our Leadership Koru. This work includes recruitment, selection, career planning, and success and development.
As we mahi [work] to support our tāngata [people], the Leadership Koru allows us to be more objective and consistent.
How to use the Leadership Koru
You can use the Leadership Koru to guide your development and find resources just for you.
The Koru outlines 16 key tikanga [behaviours] of leadership. Start by identifying which behaviours you want to develop in yourself. You can do this by taking an anonymous self-assessment. Once you’ve completed your assessment, you’ll know which of the 16 behaviours to focus developing.

The foundation of good leadership
These tikanga [behaviours] are important for everyone, no matter their job title. They focus on your personal effectiveness and your impact on those around you.
When you think about your own development, start with these behaviours. It’s worth investing time and effort in building up these characteristics.

Long-term strategy
These tikanga [behaviours] focus on two points of growth. The first is developing the long-term strategic direction for areas of the organisation. The second is connecting with the wider health system and sector.
If you’re in a senior role and leading large areas of our organisation, you might want to look at these behaviours as part of your development.
