Achieving goals looks like having clear development goals with timelines and measures of success, or staying focused during your working hours to make most of time and complete all your tasks.

Quick tips

  • Seek an understanding of how your work and the work of your team contributes to the vision of our health system. Share this understanding with others.

  • Try to see problems/challenges in your work as opportunities. Use them to motivate yourself.

  • Set challenging goals for yourself and persevere to meet them, even when obstacles arise.

  • Have a ‘can-do’ attitude; approach challenges with optimism and energy. Share with your team members the passion that drives you to succeed.

  • When starting work on a new project, think about any potential obstacles and problems that could arise. Make a plan for how to handle these.

  • Set goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). Track your progress toward these goals.

Here are some things that could get in the way of developing this behaviour:

  • Only doing what’s expected of you. Consider how you might motivate yourself to achieve more than the minimum.

  • Being too pessimistic about your ability to achieve ambitious goals. Focus on opportunities, not constraints.

  • Waiting for permission to act. Be proactive in setting goals and tackling initiatives.
